I have a love/hate relationship with two-thirds of the supposed supergroup Middle Brother. To date, Deer Tick has done no wrong. Having enjoyed Dawes live I just don’t get their recorded output, what with the bad lyrics and aped Laurel Canyon vibe. And yet Delta Spirit is a different monster. Singer Matt Vasquez was a late addition to the Middle Brother fold and yet he may have brought the best song (“Blue Eyes”) to their self-titled album.
I freely admit to owning and enjoying the entire Delta Spirit catalog, yet their latest, self-titled album, Delta Spirit, left me feeling cold. The overt reliance on electronic elements takes away from the rebellious, folkish power the band has cultivated since their beginning.
With the release of the video for “Yamaha,” the last track of the aforementioned self-titled Delta Spirit album, the band has done nothing to convince me my initial opinion was wrong.
