Formed in Vancouver, Canada in 1984, post-punk outsider artists Jean Smith and David Lester have performed and recorded under the name Mecca Normal for the last three decades. To celebrate their 30th year together, the duo will release their 14th album, Empathy for the Evil, on 16 September.
Clearly in no hurry, the album was recorded in Miami, Florida by Rat Bastard at his Laundry Room studio during a session in November 2012. Empathy for the Evil features Smith on vocals, piano, guitar and saxophone, with Lester playing acoustic guitar. Produced and mixed by KRAMER, he contributes bass, mellotron, organ and bivraphone to the album.
Having released prior albums on labels such as Kill Rock Stars, Matador and K Records, the September release of Empathy for the Evil will be available in vinyl and CD via Portland, Oregon’s M’lady’s Records.
