First Listen: Kevin Lee Florence – Peace Like a River

Given_cover_FOR-WEB-420x420Having fronted California-based Silver Darling through 2010, Portland singer/songwriter Kevin Lee Florence has since struck out on his own with a little help from friends including bassist Jon Button (Sheryl Crow, Robben Ford), drummer James McAlister (Sufjan Stevens, Bill Frisell), and guitarist Danny Donnelly, and Garth Hudson of The Band.

Culled from his career as a writer, Given‘s nine songs includes two covers from Florence’s favorites: Paul Simon and Damien Jurado. From the latter, Florence tackles “Ohio” while pairing with Hudson and his rolling organ grooves on Simon’s “Peace Like a River,” the album’s first single. Eschewing digital technology, Given is a wholly analog release.

Set for release on 16 September, you can stream “Peace Like a River” below and pre-order Given via Fluff and Gravy Records.
