Album Premiere / 8 Questions: Aaron Tinjum and the Tangents – Foreign & Domestic

Foreign DomesticWith the release of their new album, Foreign & Domestic, slated for tomorrow, Washington, DC’s Aaron Tinjum and the Tangents chatted with Bucket Full of Nails, extolling the virtues of Bavarian construction while exposing the band members’ embarrassing album purchases and the questionable practice of using social media to name your band.

The answers provided by Aaron, Katie and Andrews Berglund and Cote to our 8 Questions proved much lighter in tone than the songs on Foreign & Domestic. A lyrical diary of travel, rebuke, personal growth and soured tastebuds, the album is beautiful and striking at every turn.

Aaron Tinjum and the Tangents:
Aaron Tinjum (AT) – Guitar and Vocals
Katie Smith (KS) – Violin
Andrew Berglund (AB) – Bass
Andrew Cote (AC) – Marimba

BFoN: Favorite instrument
AT: Hohner Alto Melodica for its rich tones, portability and German engineering.
KS: Violin, of course
AB: Bass
AC: Marimba

BFoN: Favorite book
AT: At this moment, it’s Freddy & Fredericka by Mark Helprin.
KS: Let’s go with … Harry Potter series
AB: Moby Dick
AC: Man’s Search for Meaning – Viktor Frankl

BFoN: Musical influences
AT: Bob Dylan, Damien Rice, Josh Ritter, Tallest Man on Earth, Jason Mraz
KS: My elementary, middle and high school orchestra teacher: Mr. Brown
AB: John Stirratt, Donald Dunn, Zac Cockrell
AC: Incubus, Death Cab for Cutie, David Lang, Steve Reich, MAE

BFoN: Favorite album of 2015
AT: Natalie Prass – Natalie Prass
KS: The Wild and Beyond single!
AB: Meow the Jewels – Run the Jewels
AC: This is tough… I would say either So There by Ben Folds or Bones by Son Lux

BFoN: Star Wars or Star Trek
AT: Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back
KS: Lord of the Rings 🙂
AB: Wars
AC: Star Wars, but honestly I am more pumped for the new Zoolander Movie

BFoN: Which member of the band is most like a Spinal Tap character
AT: Andrew Cote
KS: Andrew Cote
AB: Andrew Cote
AC: Probably Katie, primarily because she is the only member with long hair.

BFoN: First album you purchased
AT: No idea. I first heard “Like A Rolling Stone” by Bob Dylan in 8th grade and realized music didn’t have to be sappy or a chore.
KS: Big Wille Style – Will Smith
AB: The Bends – Radiohead
AC: I think it was Now That’s What I Call Music! 3, only because it had Blink-182, R. Kelly and Limp Bizkit on it… just don’t ask.

BFoN: Origin of your band’s name
AT: “Aaron Tinjum” was delivered to me at birth and “the Tangents” is the product of an early poll on Facebook. It had some nice alliteration to it.
KS: A Facebook poll… Can’t leave the decision to anyone more important than the general public!
AB: Unsure, but it speaks to our habit of quickly getting off point.
AC: I actually don’t know the answer to this question… I am going to say Aaron’s parents are responsible for the first half but the rest I honestly don’t know…

Many thanks to Aaron, Katie and the Andrews for answering our 8 Questions. The band will be playing a record release show this Saturday 23 January at the Rock and Roll Hotel. Purchase tickets here.
