Review: Kathryn Legendre – Don’t Give a Damn

a0495390462_10Ranging from the red dirt of Texas to the foothills of Appalachia, Austin-based singer/songwriter Kathryn Legendre exudes attitude on her new four-song EP, Don’t Give a Damn.

Whether staking her own claim on country-tinged rocker “Build My Home,” proclaiming “I’d rather built my home than be made by one,” to praying from afar for the coal mining families subsisting in the “Tug River Valley,” Legendre pays homage to family ties and roots of all stripes.

With a crack backing band featuring Brian Broussard (guitar), Bennet Brown (fiddle), Zach Moulton (pedal steel, dobro), Preston Rhone (bass) and John Silva (drums), Legendre trades Loretta Lynn for Willie Nelson on “Burn One Down,” an inviting tale of herbal whimsy, before waging battle against Father Time on the fiery yet unhurried closer, “Time is a Selfish Man.”

With an honest voice and fresh eyes, Legendre upholds tradition while adding her own personal touch on the brief but memorable Don’t Give a Damn.
